Cambridgeshire Road Racing Report – 2024

The Cambs road racing league enjoyed another successful year in 2024, with strong fields at all 8 of the schedule races and the county championship races returning over the distances of 5k, 5-miles, 10K & 10-miles.

Kanina O’Neill (March) took the honours for the ladies, closely followed by Abi Kefford (Helpston) and Rosie Mead (Hunts) in 3rd position.

David Hudson and James Orrell enjoyed a seasons long battle, ending the year on the same number of points, and a 2 all tie on the head-to-head, with David just nudging the top spot with 2 overall race wins to James 1. Andrew Jakeman (March) was just a single point adrift in 3rd. It looks like 2025 will be an exciting season to watch.

The county championship races were hotly contested and despite the inevitable teething troubles, were warmly received and added some excitement to the league races and we hope to build on this for 2025. The full list of medals winners is at the end of this report.

Essex 20 Intercounty race – 17th March

The intercounty 20-mile race was held a week after the Cambs half for 2024, which did help with interest, but two hard races a week apart is never a recipe for success. We did however collect a bronze medal for the men’s team, with the ladies ending the race in 6th position overall. David Hudson (1:52:54) led home the men’s team, with Martin Amos (1:54:48), Phil Martin (1:55:10) & Alex Gibb (DNF) making up the team. The Women’s team was led home by Jess Williams (2:15:07) followed by Alice Clarkson (2:16:05), Libby Brown (2:18:11) & Helen Joyce who stepped into the team with a few days’ notice (2:39:06).

The 2025 race is on the 16th of March, and we will be looking at sending both strong male & female teams again, so please register your interest if you would like to be considered for selection.

Cambridge T&G 10k Intercounty race – 6th October

Clare Thurgood stepped into the role of team manager for the event and did a fantastic job of organising the team to a double medal winning performance. Katie Lowery led home the ladies’ team (36:11) with Clare next to cross the line (37:08), Cambridge regular Jo Colley (38:30) & Alison Stewart (39:55) helped secure team Silver.

Chris Smith led home the Men’s team with 4th place overall (30:53), closely followed by Max Walk (31:20), Cambs Road league winner David Hudson (32:33) and Mark Sampson (33:06) on debut. A fine team performance to collect the bronze and only 9 seconds away from a silver medal.
